Video URL SEO: a 12-point publishing checklist

A public video URL is only one part of a useful search landing page. Apply these twelve checks to the page people read, the video they watch and the technical signals search engines receive.

mp4tolink publishes the original uploaded file at a public URL, with a 100 MiB upload limit. It does not provide private viewing permissions, file version control, automatic transcoding, automatic thumbnails or built-in viewer statistics. Keep those boundaries visible when designing a publishing workflow.

1. Choose one search intent

Answer a specific task on each landing page. A product demonstration, repair tutorial and marketing overview need different explanations; changing only the title produces little useful distinction.

2. Write a clear title

Describe what the viewer can learn and name the relevant product or task. Avoid ranking promises, repeated keywords and dates that imply a review you have not performed.

3. Add an honest description

Summarise the actual page content and any meaningful limitation. The search engine can choose different snippet text, so the body must deliver the same information.

4. Make the player useful

Place the main video near its explanation. Verify playback on mobile and desktop. An inaccessible or unrelated recording cannot be repaired by adding structured data.

5. Provide original supporting text

Include steps, prerequisites and expected results. A corrected transcript can support accessibility, but a transcript alone may still leave the reader without the practical answer.

6. Publish a truthful thumbnail

Use an image that represents the actual recording and that your site can serve reliably. Upload hosting does not automatically generate a thumbnail; create and maintain your own when needed.

7. Choose the canonical page

Use the canonical URL of the page you want indexed. The raw media URL and the page URL serve different purposes; do not indiscriminately canonicalise useful pages to a video file.

8. Connect genuine language versions

Use hreflang only for complete language or regional alternatives. Keep references reciprocal and include each page itself. A translated headline above an English article is not a finished local version.

9. Describe the real video

Add VideoObject only where the represented video is actually available. Keep name, description, upload date, thumbnail and contentUrl or embedUrl accurate; never invent durations or interaction counts.

10. Check discovery paths

Link from relevant tool and help pages. Include canonical, indexable pages in the sitemap. Do not put broken routes, redirect chains or unfinished placeholder pages in the discovery path.

11. Protect loading performance

Reserve player dimensions to reduce layout shifts. Load heavy media when appropriate and keep the primary explanation readable before playback. Measure on a realistic connection, not only an office network.

12. Measure and maintain

Check indexing and video reports in Search Console after publication. Review broken links and outdated instructions. Search visibility depends on many signals, and passing this checklist does not guarantee indexing or rankings.

MP4 to Link & Video to Link FAQs

Does a video URL guarantee rankings?

No. Relevant, accessible page content and correct technical signals can help discovery but cannot guarantee rankings.

When should I use hreflang?

Use it for complete, accessible language or regional alternatives with matching intent and reciprocal links.

Should I add VideoObject everywhere?

No. Add accurate video markup only to a page where the described video is genuinely present.
