TXT vs SRT vs VTT: Choose the Right Transcript Export
Compare TXT, SRT, and VTT using the same short transcript. Learn which export to use for notes, subtitle imports, or HTML video, and how to review timing.

You have a transcript, but the download menu offers three files. Choosing TXT, SRT, or VTT is a decision about where the words will go next. A document needs readable text. A video player needs text connected to playback time. Your receiving editor may accept one subtitle format and reject another.
The examples below use exactly the same two sentences, making the structural differences visible without changing the content.
A quick choice by destination
| Destination | Start with | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Meeting notes, quotations, or a draft article | TXT | Names, numbers, punctuation, and paragraph breaks |
| A video editor or service that accepts SubRip | SRT | Import support, cue timing, and line wrapping |
| A text track for an HTML video player | VTT | The track loads and displays against the correct video |
Exporting all three can be useful when you are unsure about the next application. They represent the same transcription result; downloading another format does not rerun recognition or improve its accuracy.
See the same speech in three formats
Imagine the speaker says, “Open the dashboard,” followed by “Choose the report.” The timings below are illustrative, not a prediction of how an automatic model will divide your recording.
TXT: words without subtitle timing
Open the dashboard.
Choose the report.
TXT is convenient for searching, copying into notes, or preparing an article. In mp4tolink, the text export combines the current segment text with line breaks. Those line breaks do not turn it into a timed subtitle track. Keep the source recording when you need to confirm a quotation later.
SRT: numbered subtitle cues
1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000
Open the dashboard.
2
00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:06,000
Choose the report.
Each block associates text with a start and end time. The current exporter numbers SRT cues and uses a comma before milliseconds. An editor can use those timings to place text on a timeline. Check the destination's import requirements rather than assuming every application handles every variation identically.
VTT: a web text track
WEBVTT
00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:03.000
Open the dashboard.
00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:06.000
Choose the report.
The VTT export begins with WEBVTT and uses a period before milliseconds. WebVTT supports timed text resources used with HTML media. The W3C WebVTT specification defines its syntax, including cue timestamps. Changing only the filename from .srt to .vtt does not make the contents match that structure.
Generate a draft within the actual tool limits
The Video to Text tool accepts MP4, MOV, and WebM inputs up to 100 MiB and five minutes per file. Both limits apply. A small file can still exceed the duration limit. The tool checks the recording rather than silently transcribing only its first five minutes.
Processing runs in your browser using a downloaded recognition model and local decoding engine. First use needs network access for these assets; it is not a guaranteed offline workflow. Available memory, source decoding support, and browser capabilities can still prevent a supported-size file from completing.
Select the speech language when you know it, or start with automatic detection. Website language and recording language are separate choices. A multilingual recording, unfamiliar name, or noisy microphone can produce errors even when the language is selected. The current workflow transcribes; selecting an output format does not translate the speech. There is no promised accuracy percentage.
Correct words before exporting
Play the recording while reviewing the generated segments. The page displays segment times and lets you edit their text. Correct product names, dates, amounts, acronyms, and negations before copying or downloading. One missing “not” can reverse the meaning of a sentence.
Edits to segment text are reflected in the available exports. The page is not a timing editor: if a cue appears early or disappears late, adjust its timing in a subtitle editor after downloading SRT or VTT. Review the beginning, a middle passage, and the end against the same media file. Trimming or adding an introduction afterward can shift every cue.
Automatic speech recognition also does not create complete accessibility captions by itself. Review relevant speaker identification and meaningful sounds, such as an alarm or a door closing, where the audience needs that information.
Use VTT with your own HTML player
If you manage a website, a reviewed VTT file can accompany the video through a text track:
<video controls src="/media/demo.mp4">
<track kind="subtitles" src="/media/demo.en.vtt"
srclang="en" label="English" default>
</video>
This example assumes you host both files yourself at those paths. Downloading VTT from mp4tolink does not publish it or attach it to a public upload automatically. For cross-origin resources, check the player and server configuration rather than treating a local preview as proof that the published track works.
Technical references
Read the W3C WebVTT specification for format syntax and MDN's HTML track reference for integration details and the distinction between subtitles and captions. The examples here demonstrate export structure; your final transcript still needs editorial and playback review.
MP4 to Link & Video to Link FAQs
Which transcript format should I download first?
Use TXT for reading and notes, SRT when the destination accepts SubRip subtitles, and VTT for an HTML text track. Review the transcript first and check the receiving application's accepted formats.
Does changing SRT to VTT translate the spoken language?
No. Export format changes how text and timing are represented. The tool transcribes speech; it does not translate the recording into another language.
Can I correct subtitle timing inside the transcription tool?
The tool lets you edit segment text and displays each segment's times. It does not provide a subtitle timing editor. Review and adjust timing in a compatible editor after downloading SRT or VTT.
